"I'm not angry with St Helena, just frustrated that in his hour of need there was no bed"
Beverly Jacobs feels people who manage to get a bed at The Hospice are the lucky few. Her husband Geoff had been living with an incurable illness for three years, and after months of emergency hospital stays and A&E visits, was unable to be admitted to a bed at The Hospice. Beverly shares her frustration:
He said to me ‘how much more can I put up with this?’ He grabbed my hand and pulled me close and said ‘get me to The Hospice’.
St Helena’s SinglePoint gave us a great deal of help and support through that time. A wonderful woman tried to get him a bed but there wasn’t one available. SinglePoint was a lifeline at that time.
I was happy for him to be at home but it got to the point a couple of times where I couldn’t move him. He’d got up at night and fallen. I couldn’t pick him up, he was in pain and didn’t want me to touch him. I was his wife and I had to take it all; the anger, the strain.
I thought, naively, I would sit holding his hand and I’d mop his brow. But it’s not like that, he was in pain and his body was reacting in ways I didn’t know how to deal with. Unless you have a medical background, it’s hard to cope. And I had my girls to consider.
I tried to get help for him, tried to get him a bed. I’m not angry with St Helena, just frustrated that in his hour of need there was no bed. They’re swamped but there isn’t the funding there to support everyone. Everywhere you go, someone is affected by illness. There are only 15 beds for the whole area. They are stretched.
I gave the collection from Geoff’s funeral to St Helena because I can’t speak highly enough about SinglePoint. I don’t blame The Hospice, it’s the whole situation we found ourselves in.
People need to know you can’t assume a bed at The Hospice will be there when you need it the most.
On average, one person every week dies on the waiting list for a bed in The Hospice – we want to support more people when they need us most, but we need your help
