Margaret and Les renewing their wedding vows of 65 years
Margaret and Les had a very special day on Sunday 17th February when they renewed their wedding vows of 65 years in front of their family and Hospice Chaplain Vickie.
Margaret beams with pride when she says:
“It was unexpected to the last minute; my children did me proud. I could sit and tell you about my family for weeks, for years.”
Margaret and Les had a lovely day with family:
“My grandson flew over from Spain for that. My other grandson came down from Sheffield with his parents; my daughter is a palliative nurse there. My granddaughter came down from York. I’ve got a lovely family, lovely family.
“Everybody was crying. My great granddaughter wanted to know why everybody was crying and her mummy told her people cry when they’re happy, cry when they’re sad. Even my son shed a lot of tears and he doesn’t normally – I think he’s getting quite soft in his old age!
“My daughter in law got a cake for me. I had some wine.”
After 65 years, Margaret has some words of wisdom for a successful marriage: “My husband and I have never really had a bust up. Never go to work on an argument, never go to bed on an argument, because you don’t know what’s going to happen.”
Margaret wrote a note which says: At St Helena Hospice everybody is so loving and caring right from the doctors, the nurses, kitchen and cleaners, they are one big happy family.
She explains further:
“I treat this place [the Hospice] like one happy family. Nothing is too much trouble. I love it here.
“And when my time comes I want to die in here. I’ve been in hospital 10 different times; I’ve had a quadruple bypass, brain haemorrhage, two hips. I nearly need new knees so my husband says ‘we’ll buy you new ones, wooden ones’ and my reply was ‘if you do that sure as fate they’ll be full of woodworm!’
“They are so good here. I was watching one of the nurses the other night, I call her sergeant major, but she is so, so caring. I’ve got nothing but praise. I know I’m safe, it’s gorgeous here.”
