My name is Pat and I am a volunteer pot counter.

I count all of the loose change donations that are received into St Helena. I have been with the hospice nearly 4 years, I came here through my daughter as she was a volunteer here and I said to her, if ever a job comes up counting money let me know. Then along came an advert for a pot counter, so I offered to work one morning per week and 4 years on here I am still counting pots.

I sort any loose change donations that come in, that might be from the challenges or pot collections from the area, each week I come in and count what’s been collected. I really enjoy it, I’ve always worked in finance so I really enjoy working with money and I am very dedicated to it. It’s a funny little job but someone has to do it.

I do care about the hospice because I have a history with it as my mother was a patient here so I do know the need for the care and I was also involved in the redevelopment the hospice. I do think it is very essential to life and I think the people that work in the hospice ward itself are so dedicated and really lovely people.

Hospice care is a really vital body as so many people suffer, and it’s a unit that offers so much to the community. I also have experiences of the hospice at home, so it is really special to me.

I decided to volunteer for St Helena because I wanted to give something back. Who knows, in the future if I might need it. It does stem back to my mum, she was only here for a few days but it was such a relief to us and I feel I am helping, that’s what I feel I do here. Since the beginning of the hospice it has grown so much and I can see how everyone within the organisation helps.

You rarely hear of negative stories of the hospice and its always positive, I know it’s not an unhappy place. I have been involved in the movement of the hospice for a long time and know what it’s about, I do think it’s a treasure for people to carry on. It’s an amazing movement and long be it.
