Hello, my name is Kevin and I am the Donation Centre and Logistics Manager.
My role involves running the donation centre and the vans that deliver goods. Within the donation centre we receive donated goods, process them and send them out to our shops. I also run the furniture delivery and collection vans, we offer free collection for furniture and a delivery service for items that have been purchased in our store that need to be delivered.
In terms of my role within St Helena, it takes being friendly and calm to provide hospice care. We are very lucky to be really well supported by the local community, so the donation centre is very busy, for me it’s about keeping calm and dealing with customers as quickly as possible. Organisation is definitely a key component to our role within St Helena due to the volume of donations we receive. Therefore, it’s about being friendly to our customers and keeping everything organised behind the scenes to get the donations into the shops as quickly as possible. We don’t generate money ourselves but we provide the shops with the means to generate income and contribute to the funding required to provide hospice care to our local community.
To me, hospice care relates to end of life care but it’s also about all the other services that St Helena provides to the local community. St Helena offers a wide range of services, through the day centres, therapies, counselling and bereavement service. My personal interaction with a hospice was end of life care for my mum, it wasn’t with St Helena, but with another hospice who showed the same care and support as St Helena does to our local community.
I worked for a charity a few years ago, and when a job came up at St Helena it was a good opportunity for me to continue working within the charity sector, which I have really enjoyed so far. I wanted to work in a charity and want to feel like I’m doing some good and working towards a common goal.
In the donation centre reception we have created a wall for our staff and volunteers to share their stories of why they want to work for St Helena. Many people decide to work here because they may have lost a loved one, so through the interactions with our volunteers and staff we all share our stories of how the hospice has helped. Even though we do not work directly in the hospice, it’s nice to remind ourselves of why we are here. Hearing the stories from my colleagues really gives me that special feeling of knowing what we are working for.
My perception of hospice care has changed slightly since I started working here, I have learnt a lot more about the different services St Helena provides to the local community. It’s not just the traditional care that people know about, St Helena offer so much more than just care in The Hospice.
