Yamuna Nair was worried when her mum Vijay Pillai chose to be cared for by Hospice in the Home through her journey with ovarian cancer last year. Yamuna explains…
I was nervous about hospice care in the home at the beginning given the potential emotional and practical challenges ahead. However, mum making the decision for care at home for her personal reasons made the challenge easier.
Soon I realised from the excellent care provided by St Helena that I needn't worry at all, as they took care of everything.
Mum was a positive lady, she loved life. I think that’s why it’s really tough for me to accept it. Mum was a very homely lady and I wanted to make sure she had a homely setting, so when the GP asked whether we would like mum to be set up at home, we said yes without hesitation. St Helena was engaged right from the very beginning and I knew I’d be supported.
You can imagine, there were a lot of emotions and heartache to see mum in pain, especially during the last couple of days. I can’t even explain how much they supported us; even like the nurses stopping by just to talk to us. They just carried us through the whole difficult time. That’s why the hospice is so precious. I can’t say thank you enough.
Mum had a choice and it was her wish to be at home. In the last couple of days, you just don’t know what will happen from one minute to the next and I was thankful to be there at home with mum.
It means a lot to me to go in and see mum’s leaf on the amazing memory tree at The Hospice. Mum was cremated so there isn’t anywhere we can go. It’s so important for me and for the children to have somewhere they can go.
Yamuna dedicated a leaf to her mum on our memory tree in The Hospice. She takes comfort to know she can visit with her family any time, to all come together to reflect and celebrate Vijay's life.
