Our patients are now able to explore new worlds, holiday destinations and landmarks from their own beds thanks to our new virtual reality headset, crowdfunded and supplied by a hospice supporter.
We were delighted to be contacted by Toby Freeman back in November to say that he would be setting up a crowd funding page to raise money to buy the hospice this incredible piece of technology. Toby has continued to support the hospice after his brother died in the Inpatient Unit in 2011.
Toby explained “Having been by my brother's side during his time at the hospice, I witnessed first-hand how important it is for patients and families to have a release from their reality. St Helena is fantastic at providing space, time and opportunities to do this and I hope that the virtual reality headset can be an important addition to their holistic approach to patient well-being. I'm so proud that we can give people with incurable illnesses the chance to learn, explore and travel; because life doesn't stop when you arrive at a hospice.”
Toby named the crowdfunding page ‘The Discovr Project’ with the aim of raising £500 to supply the hospice with a Samsung Gear VR Headset, Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone, sim-card & headphones and an additional Google PlayStore Gift-Card. Local MP, Will Quince, saw the project had raised £117 and generously offered to donate the remaining £383 to make the project a reality! This meant that project had been fully funded after just 2 days of going live!

It will undoubtedly impact on the lives of patients and their families and we feel very lucky to have supporters who are willing to help us go the extra mile for the people we support, to live well and make the most of every moment”.
