Four letters – GDPR – have been imprinted on the minds of charity fundraisers and data managers over recent months. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a new EU law that will come into effect on 25th May 2018 to replace the current Data Protection Act.
So why does St Helena need supporters to ‘tick yes’?
From May next year, if supporters of St Helena have not given their consent preferences regarding how they would like to be contacted, they will no longer receive any information from us. We're pleased to be part of the positive changes and would love to stay in contact keeping our supporters updated. The community plays such a huge part in ensuring we can continue to care for those living in the area with an incurable illness, but many people still don’t realise that we only gets a third of our funding from the NHS. The majority (£6.2 million to be precise!) comes from people who kindly donate and support the hospice in different ways.
Once the data protection laws change, unless supporters have ticked yes to support St Helena, we might not be able to contact them with latest hospice news and ways to get involved. Becky Evans, Clinical Nurse Manager said:
“You can tell us exactly how you would like to hear from us, but without this tick we can’t share stories and information with you, and more importantly without your support we wouldn’t be able to care for people in your local community who need us. Please continue to show your support for St Helena – all it takes is a tick.”
