A team of staff from The Gilberd School, Colchester, are preparing to shimmy round the town for St Helena in memory of their friend and colleague, Lynn Love.

The group of around 15 men and women have signed up for St Helena’s Midnight Walk which is taking place on Saturday 11th May, to support the local hospice who provided care and support for Lynn and her family after she was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2016.

Vicky Evans, HR Assistant, at The Gilberd School, said: “We’re taking part in the Midnight Walk again this year in memory of Lynn who worked here with us for many years.

“We first did the Midnight Walk two years ago, after Lynn was diagnosed with the brain tumour and we all wanted to support St Helena.

“As a school we are very grateful to St Helena for the care and support that they have given in the past and continue to provide to the local community and to our school community.

“Many of us have got personal reasons for taking part. We want to raise awareness for the amazing work that St Helena do and want to help them raise funds to ensure that their valuable work continues to benefit so many.”

Rebecca Litton, Assistant Headteacher, at The Gilberd School, added: “My mum’s partner was recently cared for at The Hospice, and the treatment there was incredible. It was just so calm and dignified.

“It’s great to be able to take part in events like this to support St Helena and to ensure that their valuable work continues to benefit so many.”

Men, women and children aged 11 and over are invited to join the Midnight Walk and can choose to walk either 4.5 or 9 miles around Colchester. Everyone is asked to raise sponsorship and all the money raised goes towards helping local people face incurable illness and bereavement, supporting them, their families and carers.

Team Gilberd is taking on the 9 mile route and after dressing up for the photo today, are looking forward to the event.

Vicky said: “It’s really well organised and a great atmosphere. Last time we took part, we had people who didn’t want to walk it, so they volunteered as marshals instead, cheering us on as we went around, and that was great because it felt like they were part of it too. It’s emotional, but it’s amazing!

Rebecca continued: “When we did it with Lynn, when she stepped over the finish line, it was truly emotional. We all took it in turns to push her around, but at the end she was determined to walk over the finish line herself, with a bit of help. She really enjoyed it.”

Both the 4.5 and 9 mile routes pass the memory stop and everyone will have the opportunity to place a personalised tag on the special memory tree with a message to those they’re remembering and walking for.

Registration is £10 per person for the first 500 people signed up and will then increase to £15 per person.

All walkers are asked to try to raise a minimum of £50 each in sponsorship. Everyone who raises over £250 in sponsorship will be entered into a prize draw to win 2 tickets to see Craig David at Castle Park on 2nd June, kindly donated by Liz Hobbs Group Limited.
