Nearly one thousand men and women donned their head wear in support of this year’s Midnight Walk.

The weather was on our side which helped to make our tenth anniversary birthday walk a great success. Over 900 participants turned out wearing their most fabulous hats, wildest wigs and outlandish hair dos for our flagship event.

Before setting off from Stanfords, The Livestock Market, walkers were entertained by head turning performances from local choir Funky Voices, Bows and Belles clog dancers, Just Jay dance troupe and a fabulous warm up from Just Jules, Julie Palmer. Walkers were welcomed by fire jugglers before they explored the venue where a magic mirror was capturing photos of walkers and Starbucks (from Colchester Retail Park) were offering refreshments to purchase as well as a decorate your own reusable cup competition.

Along the route walkers were welcomed to spend a moment of reflection at the Memory Stop which was situated on the grounds of Colchester Rugby Football Club on Mill Road. The spot had a memory tree where walkers were invited to leave a tag with a message written on to their loved one they were walking in memory of.

Crossing the finish line from midnight the walkers were congratulated with a special ten-year anniversary medal and a donut. St Helena is hoping, with the support from their walkers, to raise over £85,000 for hospice care from this event – the grand total will be revealed later in the year.

Lisa Chenery, Events Fundraiser said: “The night was an incredible success, it was quite overwhelming to see so many men and women together to support their local hospice. The atmosphere was electric and the dance moves were on point - it was one of our best walks to date!

A huge thank you to everyone who took part in the walk and for those who volunteered or provided their services which helped make the night such a huge success.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Fenwick, Elms Price and Greyfriars Colchester for their support.”

All walkers who raise over £500 sponsorship before Monday 23rd July will be entered into a fabulous draw to win one of two amazing prizes, kindly donated by Greyfriars Colchester. Their Romance Packages include an overnight stay in a deluxe suite with dinner and breakfast.  Walkers can drop cash donations or send cheques to St Helena’s Fundraising Office:

Alternatively, if participants are unable to make it to the fundraising office, they can drop cash donations at the St Helena Shops, the Tendring Centre, Clacton or the Myland Hall Site. Donations can also be made online here
