Less than a week left for St Helena supporters to sign up to our annual Pier to Pier walk starting at Clacton or Walton piers on Sunday 2nd April at 10am. Registration for this family-friendly event closes at 12pm on Friday 31st March.
This year we're celebrating the ten year anniversary of the walk which was originally founded in 2007 by local supporters Steve Randall and Donna Lehain in memory of Steve’s father Lionel Randall who died under the care of the hospice in March 2006.
Donna and Steve adopted the coastal route between Clacton and Walton piers and worked with our fundraising team and close friend Karen Ware to create the event. Little did they know, ten years later the walk has raised a staggering £296,318 to support hospice care.
Although the walk was created in support of the hospice, the couple worked hard to plan the logistics and managed registrations of the event working with local companies for sponsorship and Clacton Pier to enable the start and end of the walk to be on their forecourt.
The walk was initially named the Lime walk and in the first year raised over £7,500 for the hospice. In 2008 and 2009 the couple combined the walk to support Essex Air Ambulance as a second charity and renamed it the ‘Lemon and Lime Walk’ (lemon being Air Ambulance, Lime being hospice). As the event grew with more and more supporters wanting to take part in the walk, so did the need for a team to organise logistics and registrations. The couple generously handed the event over to our events team in 2011 and we renamed the walk, the ‘Pier to Pier Walk’.
The event is now one of the biggest fundraisers of the year for us and to mark the anniversary we would like to say a huge thank you to Donna, Steve and Karen for creating such an incredible fundraising event. Every year the coast sees over 1,000 hospice supporters walking between Clacton and Walton Piers, remembering loved ones and celebrating their support for us.
“We are very grateful to Donna, Steve and Karen for setting up this event to support the hospice. As a local charity which relies on our community for around two thirds of the money needed to run our services, it is ideas like this which means we can continue to help local people with an incurable illness. We are thrilled that Donna, Steve and Karen are taking part again this year to mark the anniversary“, said Helen Causer, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at St Helena Hospice.
Registration for the event is free but participants are encouraged to raise a minimum of £30 sponsorship.
