St Helena has opened a new shop on Peartree Road, Colchester which will be dedicated to clothes, accessories, books, and a café.
St Helena’s Books, Brew and Boutique, which is next door but one to the local charity’s donation centre and furniture shop, was officially opened on Monday 8th April. A crowd gathered outside as the ribbon was cut at 10am by long-serving volunteer, Dennis Brook.
The shop currently features an array of women’s, men’s and children’s fashion including clothes, shoes, bags, hats and jewellery. From June, the shop will also become home to a range of books and a café, where people are welcome to relax, enjoy a beverage and read one of their new books.
Dennis, 73, of Colchester, has volunteered for St Helena’s shops for 9 years after his wife, Sheila, was cared for at The Hospice before she died in 2009.
He said: “I started volunteering after I lost my wife. The Hospice looked after us so well, I wanted to give something back – it’s the best reason to volunteer.
“I first volunteered at the shop in Magdalen Street, before moving to the furniture shop at Angora when it opened in 2010 and I’ve been here ever since! The staff are lovely and I really enjoy volunteering here.
“The new shop looks great and I really hope the local community come and take a look to support all the work St Helena does.”
Anna Triolo, St Helena’s Books, Brew and Boutique Shop Manager, said: “We’re thrilled to open our new shop and look forward to welcoming lots of new customers to the store, which we believe is one of the biggest shops in the area.
“In this shop we have clothes for both men and women of all ages, as well as shoes and accessories, and from June we will also have plenty of books, and a café. And, of course, just 2 doors away we have our furniture store which also houses homeware and bric-a-brac – so when you pop down to Peatree Road, we can cater for all your shopping needs!”
St Helena has 18 shops across North Essex and all the money raised from sales in the shops goes towards helping local people face incurable illness and bereavement, supporting them, their families, friends and carers.
