This March, St Helena has joined forces with other hospices across the UK to support Open Up Hospice Care, a Hospice UK led campaign aimed at widening access to the care and support hospices provide to the local community.
One in four people in the UK miss out on the care they need according to earlier research by Hospice UK - due to a range of reasons including: late or a lack of referrals to hospice services and low levels of awareness about hospice care and where and when this support is available.
We all share a common goal; to be here every step of the way for everyone who needs us, helping life go on in the face of death, dying and bereavement.
Throughout Open Up Hospice Care, we will be sharing the many ways we can support local people, like you and your families, including highlighting some of our key services that you may not know about, such as our Safe Harbour project which reaches out to people who traditionally have difficulty accessing hospice services.
The care St Helena provides is much more than just a building. Did you know that many of our patients are cared for in the community, either through our Hospice in the Home service or via our 24/7 advice line, Singlepoint, or that we have a rehabilitation team who assess patient’s individual needs and offer support to help them remain as independent as possible for as long as possible and help improve their quality of life.
Keep an eye on our website and on our Facebook page where we will be sharing more of the ways we can help local people facing an incurable illness and bereavement, helping them make their own choices and live with dignity, and some of our patients and families receiving our care and support will share their stories.
Not everyone who needs hospice care can get it. You can help us open up hospice care so we can reach more people who need our vital care and support by taking part in a Taste of Home.
This March, will you open up your home and host a Taste of Home dinner party to raise money for St Helena?
All you have to do is pick a date, plan your menu and invite your family, friends, and colleagues etc to marvel at your cooking (or takeaway ordering skills) and ask them to make a donation to St Helena in return for enjoying a delicious meal.
Food comes attached to precious memories. Sharing that food with those close to you is sharing and growing those memories – and is a great way to support your local charity.

Open Up Hospice Care is a fundraising and awareness-raising campaign which aims to broaden access to hospice care, so that more people who need it are able to get this type of care.
The campaign has been initiated by Hospice UK and runs nationally from 4 to 29 March 2019. St Helena is a member of Hospice UK and is playing an active role in the Open Up Hospice Care campaign locally.
The Open Up Hospice Care campaign launched in July 2017. The pilot focused on the fact that one in four people were not able to get expert care at the end of life. This year the focus is on hospice care provided in the home and the community.
