We reach out to members of our community to help ensure life goes on in the face of dying, death and bereavement. Issues that affect all of us, including children. As well as providing education and support to local schools we support children who are facing bereavement.
We welcome opportunities to come and speak in assemblies and can carry out age-appropriate talks about St Helena and how we help local people face incurable illness. Our friendly mascot Dandy loves to visit schools and make new friends, so we often bring him along with us. High fives and cuddles are his favourites!
We also want to get children, of all ages, involved in awareness raising, supporting us and getting involved in fundraising for St Helena. There are many different ways in which schools can get involved and we are always happy to discuss new ideas.
Montgomery Infant School have been a great support to our fundraising. Each year they invite children in their school to decorate collection pots and they then collect small change over a number of weeks. The children thoroughly enjoy creating their masterpieces, it encourages them to talk with their families about important issues and the money raised is a wonderful support for us.
One way you can get your school involved is with our £10 Challenge. You can give your students a chance to test their entrepreneurial skills. Each group of students registered from your school will receive £10 kindly donated by Birkett Long Solicitors. The £10 can be used to kick-start fundraising ideas with the idea that teams will make as much profit for St Helena as they can within two months! If they could turn £10 into £100, that could pay for two support sessions for a local child, who is having trouble coping with the death of a family member.
“I really enjoyed being creative and seeing how our ideas flourished as it was interesting to see and discuss what worked and what didn’t. I think it’s a really good way of building independence and communication skills, as you would have to talk about your ideas and try to sell your product and/or advertise your idea. I think it’s a really good idea for anyone who likes thinking outside the box and getting out there and everyone should give it a go. It was a fantastically rewarding experience.”
Our £10 challenge can also support study requirements for a broad range of subjects including English and Mathematics. Schools in England are required under the National Curriculum to promote a curriculum that is broadly balanced and meets the need of all pupils. Our challenge supports this in a number of ways, including promoting skills that help ensure students are well prepared for the next stage of their education, employment or training.
