When our director of care, Jo, started working at St Helena Hospice, she met a lady whose husband died at The Hospice, and she said something to Jo that struck her heart.
In the last few days of her husband’s life, she was with him constantly 24 hours a day. She slept on a camp bed by his bedside, but what she wanted to do more than anything, was to get into bed and cuddle him like she had done her whole married life. The camp bed was lower than the medical bed and her arm went numb and painful as she reached up to him to hold his hand through the night. They had never spent a night apart and she felt in those last few days she couldn’t be as close to him as she would have wanted to be.
From that point on it became Jo’s focus to try to make sure that we have at least one cuddle bed at St Helena Hospice.
A cuddle bed is a multi-functional medical bed which can expand out to a double bed. They cost around £15,000 each, so it’s not a cheap investment but it’s such a positive one.
Jo said: “To me a cuddle bed is the icing on the cake; it’s the epitome of what we try to do at St Helena Hospice. Please help us to make the most of those last precious moments that families have together.”

"We’d slept for so long on our little camp beds next to our daughter Gemma. Every little noise, we had to get out to have a look because we couldn’ t see her. Towards the end I would get into bed with Gemma, not having much sleep at all. The nurses brought in another hospice bed so we could sleep at the same level as her, almost like a double bed to sleep in with her. It meant we could just lay and hold her hand at night. Gemma was unconscious then but we’d like to think she was aware we were so close."

"I got a bit annoyed because there was nowhere for me to sleep. I wanted to be with my mum in case she d ied in the night. I was 16 and too tall to get on my mum’s bed because she was taking up the bed. The nurses understood because emotions were high, and the next day there was a pop up bed at the bottom of my mum’s bed . I slept so well knowing I was next to my mum."
