Bereavement Support for Adults

We offer support to all those who have been bereaved in north and mid Essex, regardless of the cause of death or when or where the individual has died.

We take referrals via our website or over the phone after a death has occurred and you can self-refer directly or be referred to us by someone who is supporting you, with your consent.

Each person is affected differently by bereavement and we aim to support you by helping your life to go on in the face of bereavement.

We offer both informal groups designed to provide support, information and coping strategies for people who are adjusting to living with grief. We also offer therapeutic counsellor-led groups for support after bereavement by suicide, stillbirth and neo-natal death, or death of a child. Our groups are welcoming and run by experienced staff and volunteers. At present, all group support is provided via video link.

Our bereavement support may also include one-to-one counselling and support, based on an assessment of your needs. We have an experienced team of specialist bereavement volunteers and counsellors able to provide this support. At present, all one to one support is provided via telephone.

The support we offer to you is dependent, on and tailored to, your needs, which we identify in your assessment based on the answers you give in your referral.

If you would like to access our bereavement service please refer yourself online by clicking here in the first instance, answering all questions as fully as possible. This will take you between 10-15 minutes to complete, so please ensure you have plenty of time available to fill this out. If you do not have access to the internet, please call 01206 984 274 to refer yourself.

Bereavement during the Coronavirus pandemic

During the global coronavirus pandemic, we are facing a tragic loss of life, often under very difficult circumstances including social isolation. Because of pressures on frontline services, and restrictions on visiting to hospitals etc, we understand that the death of your loved one may feel particularly traumatic.

At St Helena, we provide bereavement support to all, no matter the cause of death.

The death of your loved one does not have to be related to coronavirus and you do not need to have had support from St Helena prior to your referral for bereavement support. If you are bereaved at this time, you can refer yourself here or call 01206 984 274 for further information and support.

For further information about bereavement and coronavirus, including funerals and grieving in isolation please read our coping with bereavement leaflet here

During the summer and at Christmas we provide an opportunity for families and friends to remember and commemorate the death of their loved one within an informal setting at one of our memorial services run by St Helena’s chaplaincy and bereavement teams.

Remember and celebrate a loved one this Christmas at one of our Light up a Life services - find your nearest service here

Without the help and generosity of our fundraisers and donors we wouldn’t be able to offer our Bereavement Support to hundreds of local people each year. We offer a number of ways that people can donate in memory of a loved one to help us to continue this support.
